If you don't know the rules, then here they are:
1: The first pokemon met on a new route is the only pokemon you are allowed to catch on that route forever. If it dies, tough luck!
2: Every new pokemon must have a unique nickname.
3: No healing outside of battles.
4: This is the most important rule! If a pokemon faints, you are not allowed to use it ever again. You must release it to the wild, or put it in the box if you want to keep it for your main game. Just, if it faints, it is considered dead.

Currently I am attempting Nuzlocke Yellow, and anyone else who is attempting one may post here to keep us updated. So yeah. Whatever.

Also, it seems like my sig doesn't want to appear in the chat, and it holds my current progression. Never mind, it's on this one.

Well, you don't HAVE to use the starter if you don't want to, but the starters for the most part are rather useful. And you CAN catch the same pokemon. Say, your Poochyena dies right off the bat, and you go to a new route, and its the first to appear, you can catch it. In emerald I ended up with like 4 poochys. Also, Free pokemon, like the lapras in frlgrby are exceptions to the rule. You can have as many free pokemon as you want, BUT no outside trades. In-game trades are fine though.

Well... It depends on how you look at it. Technically Pokemon IS a game, so you are right there. These are just rules set out to make the game a little more challenging for the player, as well as interesting. Plus with the risk of losing your pokemon every battle, it makes you make smarter decisions, and perhaps not use pokemon as meat shields anymore.

Ehh... If you can follow the basic rules, it isn't too bad. But it's exciting when you actually start playing.

Only downside is, unless you get EXTREMELY lucky, legendaries will end up having to be killed off.
